SUSAN KERSH PORTFOLIO
Kinetic Stairwell

brief:
For this project, my course mates and I explored a certain space in university building. I had four flights of stairs, and was divided by a wall. The top of the stairwell had a door that led to the library. The other half of the space was completely empty.
Our brief was to redesign the space, which was fun yet complex.
The opening door also led to one of the studios. This space being in between two academic heavy sites, I thought this area could be utilised as a way to decompress via movement.
Studies show that although Gen Z score higher with fitness rather than other generations, our mental healthy lacks by numbers.
I didn't want this space to be a "gym," but somewhere you could physically decompress from intellectual burnout.
platform 1:

Since my theme for this project was fun movement amongst other students, the first platform is patterned with circular intrusions. My idea for this would be each person balances on the gaps in between, making it a bit of a mobility game, to get to the center structure.

platform 2:

For the second platform, I put a slightly different spin on balancing. Instead of intrusions, I created extrusion posts to balance and sit on; mobility is more optional here. There is still a platform beneath, but it is clear acrylic, which I thought would be amusing for people who are just entering the space or are below.

platform 3:

For platform three, I wanted to put in hammock-like structures. This idea represents another layer of playful interaction, that remains a slight workout - climbing onto hammocks. The swinging factor also adds movement and fluidity to the space.
